Proverbs 6-7; Psalm 7; Romans 11
Wisdom is extremely necessary in all areas of life. Solomon provides numerous practical examples of its application. Wisdom protects from many troubles:
- It helps to be cautious in making promises (Prov. 6:1-5).
- It helps to understand the danger of laziness (Prov. 6:6-11).
- It helps to avoid deceit and wickedness (Prov. 6:12-19).
A large portion of these chapters is devoted to the particular danger of lust and adultery. The second part of Proverbs 6 describes the guaranteed troubles for those who fall into sexual sin by ignoring wisdom - "Can a man scoop fire into his lap without his clothes being burned?" (Prov. 6:27), "But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself" (Prov. 6:32).
Proverbs 7 provides a detailed description of the aggressiveness and subtlety of sexual temptations, making them especially dangerous. This happens to the "simple" (Prov. 7:7), and both young and mature people can be simple. It happens when no one is watching - "at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in" (Prov. 7:9). Sexual temptation is built on deceit and lies. People perceive lust as love ("Let's enjoy ourselves with love!" Prov. 7:18). Driven by lust, those open to temptation perceive deceptive caresses as reality and therefore fall into the trap (Prov. 7:21-23).
Psalm 7
Another prayer of David during the time Saul pursued him. David understands that he is being unjustly persecuted and therefore asks for God's judgment - "Lord my God, if I have done this and there is guilt on my hands… then let my enemy pursue and overtake me" (Psalm 7:3-5) and further continues - "Judge me, Lord, according to my righteousness" (Psalm 7:8), emphasizing his confidence that "God is a righteous judge" (Psalm 7:11). This confidence gives him the foundation to praise the Lord (Psalm 7:17).
Romans 11
Romans 11 provides the concluding facts to explain the position of Israel concerning the Gospel. In this chapter, the Apostle Paul states that despite Israel's rejection of the Messiah, its history is not over. There has always been a faithful remnant in Israel, and in the end times, Israel as a nation in its remnant will entirely turn to the Lord - "…a partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And in this way, all Israel will be saved…" (Rom. 11:25-26). This chapter ends with a great doxology summarizing the message of the Gospel - "Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!... For from him and through him and for him are all things" (Rom. 11:33-36).
