Proverbs 8-10; Psalm 144; Romans 12
The significance of wisdom is another dominant theme in the book of Proverbs. Chapter 8 elaborately describes its nature and its role in people's lives. Wisdom here is personified and speaks in the first person. Wisdom refers to all truth that defines the reality of existence. It was birthed in God “…before the world began,” “When there were no oceans, I was given birth, when there were no springs abounding with water” (Prov. 8:22-26).
God’s wisdom became the instrument that defined the laws of nature, on which all creation exists (Prov. 8:27-29). Wisdom made it beautiful by describing the reality in which the God-created world exists so that creation brings joy to people (Prov. 8:30-31).
Therefore, those who live in harmony with wisdom will be blessed, and those who resist it “…harm themselves…” (Prov. 8:32-36). Hence, “Her fruit is better than gold…” (Prov. 8:19). Wisdom is the foundation of good governance (Prov. 8:14-18). Since wisdom is not just an impersonal set of laws but is birthed by God, the right relationship with God is a necessary condition for the correct perception of wisdom - “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding” (Prov. 9:10). True wisdom acknowledges that God is the source of all good (Prov. 10:22).
Psalm 144
Another confession of our complete dependence on God is that David does this regularly, in various circumstances, recognizing his insignificance—“…what is man that you are mindful of him?” (Psalm 144:3). At the same time, he understands that by His mercy, God saves and delivers and becomes the source of all blessings.
Romans 12
Romans 12 speaks about the results of the Gospel’s work in the heart of a saved person. Since, because of our sinfulness, we deserved eternal destruction, we no longer belong to ourselves. Hence the natural conclusion: “…offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship” (Rom. 12:1). This service begins with the transformation of the mind (Rom. 12:2) and the correct view of oneself - “…do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, by the faith God has distributed to each of you” (Rom. 12:3). Our value is not in ourselves but in God who saved us. He defines our individuality, created for cooperation with Him and edifying the Body of Christ, the Church (Rom. 12:4-8). Serving with the gifts God gives us becomes effective when done with the attitude set by God (Rom. 12:9-21).
