Proverbs 14-15; Romans 14

Continuing to present a collection of expressions of wisdom, Solomon focuses on several themes.

- Comparison of wisdom and foolishness - “The wise woman builds her house, but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down” (Proverbs 14:1). “The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception” (Proverbs 14:8). “The simple believe anything, but the prudent give thought to their steps” (Proverbs 14:15).
- The danger of temper, irritability, idle talk, and other sins of the tongue - “The wise fear the Lord and shun evil, but a fool is hotheaded and yet feels secure” (Proverbs 14:16). “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty” (Proverbs 14:23). “A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful” (Proverbs 14:25). “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly” (Proverbs 15:1-2). “The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit” (Proverbs 15:4).
- The importance of the fear of the Lord is reiterated - “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death” (Proverbs 14:27). “Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 15:33).

Romans 14

Having explained the essence of salvation through faith in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the apostle addresses the relationship of Christians to secondary matters of Christian practice and life. The main idea is that we need to be tolerant of each other. The most important thing is that each Christian lives seeking the glory of God: “Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God, and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. None of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone” (Romans 14:6-7). It is important to act according to faith and love, caring for the souls of our neighbors: “If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Romans 14:15-17).
