Proverbs 22-23; Psalm 117; 1 Thessalonians 1
Proverbs 22-23
Continuing to impart wisdom, Solomon emphasizes that true wisdom is linked to the fear of the Lord and humility before Him. God governs the universe; therefore, following His truth leads to success, while opposing Him leads to disaster.
- God, by His sovereign will, created different people with different capabilities: "The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all" (Proverbs 22:2).
- At the same time, general principles determine the success and well-being of people: "Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life" (Proverbs 22:4).
- The importance of timely instruction of children is emphasized once again (Proverbs 22:6, 15; 23:13). The overall goal of all instructions is "so that your trust may be in the Lord... so that you may know the certainty of the words of truth" (Proverbs 22:19-21).
The theme of the right attitude towards wealth and the wealthy is also highlighted several times in these chapters.
- A good name is better than wealth (Proverbs 22:1).
- Do not become a borrower: "The borrower is a slave to the lender" (Proverbs 22:7).
- Do not be lazy (Proverbs 22:13).
- Do not curry favor with the rich and influential (Proverbs 23:1-3).
- Do not be deceived by wealth; it will not make you happy (Proverbs 23:5-6).
Another theme presented here in particular detail is the danger of drunkenness (Proverbs 23:20, 29-35).
Psalm 117
The shortest psalm in the Book of Psalms focuses on two of God's most frequently repeated qualities: His mercy and His truth.
1 Thessalonians 1
The church in Thessalonica was founded by the Apostle Paul very quickly. He stayed there for only three weeks before he and his companions were expelled from the city. Remarkably, in that short time, God did a profound work in the hearts of the believers there.
- "You became imitators of us and the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit" (1 Thessalonians 1:6).
- "And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia" (1 Thessalonians 1:7).
- "The Lord's message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere" (1 Thessalonians 1:8).
The believers in Thessalonica absorbed three of the most important aspects of Christianity from the very beginning:
- "They turned to God from idols" (1 Thessalonians 1:9).
- They began " serving the living and true God" (1 Thessalonians 1:9).
- They began to "wait for His Son from heaven" (1 Thessalonians 1:10).
